One day down and so many more to go...
As you can tell I've decided to start a student teaching blog. I'll do my best to updated it at the beginning and end of each week. I can't promise that such a feat will happen (it might be more it might be less), but I will try my best.
Overall my first day went well. The CR-V and I pulled out of the driveway at about 6:20am, there is something unbecoming about being awake before the sun is...but such is the life of a teacher right? With my professional attire, complete with pointed black flats (which turned out to be a poor life choice), and a little bit of sleep left in my eyes I was ready to conquer the student teaching world. My shoes clopped along the floors of the quiet, student-less hallways as I searched for the door marked "3rd Grade." The custodian was nice enough to point me in the correct direction of my classroom. As I walked through the doorway the smiling face of T1 (I'll be referring to my teachers at T1 and T2) shined back at me. She showed me around a bit and then had me walk downstairs to make some copies. When I ascended back to the room eleven 3rd grade faces stared back at me. Some with smiles, others with a "Who are you?" look.
I took a seat in an empty chair and worked on some grading as T1 went through the lessons of the morning. When it was singing time T1 introduced me to everyone and all the kids waved, granted they were slightly shy and uncertain waves, but all waves nonetheless. Eventually T2 arrived and we introduced ourselves. T1 soon left and T2 and I headed down to the breakroom while the students were at recess. I had all sorts people of me asking me things like "So you're from such and such town!" And I'm thinking yes...how did you know that? Apparently word spreads quickly in a small school ;). I'm guessing email notifications had something to do with it as well. Once the bell rang T2 and I made our way back to the classroom for the last lessons of the day. One of which consisted of watching a movie, no complaints there! The final portion of the day was spent in the principals office. Don't worry it wasn't as bad as it sounds. A fellow student teacher and I sat down with the principal and discussed expectations, projects that we need to complete, and the like. It was all very overwhelming to say the least, but everything will get done. Baby steps. I soon made my way back to the car with blistered feet, tired eyes, and a head swirling with teaching possibilities. This will be fun.
Lessons Learned from Today:
-This experience will be a fun challenge.
-Feeding a stack of papers in the top tray of a copier saves a lot more time than doing it one by one or two by two.
Goals for tomorrow:
-Learn the student's names.
-Get familiar with the way the classroom works.
-Wear different shoes.
Yay, Michelle! So glad you started the blog for your experiences of student teaching! I bookmarked this on my blog roll. :) Can't wait to hear more about it!
